Be the Signal
Before any marketing activity makes sense, you need to know exactly who you're trying to reach and what you're going to say to them. Not a general direction. A specific target and a specific message that only your MSP can own.
Most MSPs skip this step. They build a website, post on LinkedIn, and run outreach campaigns without ever defining who they're trying to reach at a granular level. The result is marketing that feels busy and produces nothing. Step 1 is the foundation everything else builds on. Get this wrong and the next eight steps are expensive noise.
What This Step Covers
Can you finish this sentence in one breath? "We help [specific vertical] [specific outcome] — and [the specific reason no competitor can honestly claim the same]." If another MSP in your city could say the exact same thing, the hook isn't specific enough yet.
Why Most MSPs Get This Wrong
The most common failure at Step 1 is mistaking a broad service description for a positioning statement. "We provide proactive IT support to businesses in the Chicago area" is a description. It answers the question "what do you do?" It does not answer the question "why should I choose you over the five other MSPs I found today?"
The Signature Hook answers the second question. It is built from three elements: a named vertical, a specific business outcome, and a proof-backed differentiator. All three must be present. Two out of three is still a commodity claim.
You already have the hook. It lives in your best client relationships. The problem you've solved more times than anyone else in your city. The vertical where your track record is deep enough to name a number. Step 1 is about surfacing that hook, naming it, and making it the front door to every marketing touchpoint you have.
Step 1 is the first thing in every 90-day plan Andrew builds. It comes from your intake form and becomes the foundation of everything else.
