Turn Fans Into Fuel

Clients→Referral Machine
By Andrew Moon · Orange Nomad · The 3Cs Marketing Framework

87% of MSPs say referrals are their best source of new business. Fewer than 23% have any formal system for generating them. Step 9 closes that gap.

Referrals don't happen at scale without a system. The clients who would refer you are not doing it because no one ever asked them directly, at the right moment, with a simple mechanism to follow through. Step 9 builds that mechanism: a named referral program, a structured ask at QBRs, a Google review campaign, and a case study that does the selling for you in every future proposal.

What This Step Covers

Launch a formal referral program — $250–$500 reward per signed contract, announced at QBRs
Owner: You. Deadline: Day 70. Cost: $0 to launch.
Run the Google review campaign — ask top 5–8 clients at QBR, send direct link in follow-up
Owner: You. Deadline: Day 75. Cost: $0.
Identify upsell candidates from QBR conversations and create proposals
Owner: You. Deadline: Day 75. Cost: $0.
Request LinkedIn testimonials from top 3–5 clients
Owner: You. Deadline: Day 80. Cost: $0.
Develop one case study from the best client win in the quarter
Owner: You + designer. Deadline: Day 85. Cost: ~$150–$300.
The Referral Ask

The right moment to ask for a referral is at the QBR — not in a newsletter, not in a mass email. The client is in a business conversation, thinking about their network, and has just been reminded of the value you deliver. A direct, specific ask in that moment converts. "We're growing our presence in [vertical] and you came to mind immediately. If you know a firm like yours that's frustrated with their IT provider, I'd love an introduction." That's the ask.
