How to Write an MSP Positioning Statement
The positioning statement is one sentence. It is the hardest sentence you will ever write for your business, and the most valuable. Every piece of marketing you produce — website, LinkedIn, outreach, proposals — either flows from this sentence or wastes effort.
Most MSP owners have never written one. They have a general sense of who they serve, but nothing precise enough to build marketing around. Precision is the point. A positioning statement that could apply to any MSP applies to no one in particular.
What Good Looks Like
The pattern is the same in every example: a named vertical, a specific outcome, a number or credential that closes the credibility gap before the first conversation.
How to Write Yours — Five Steps
Start with your best existing client
Think of the client you'd clone if you could. Best MRR, easiest relationship, most likely to refer. Write down their industry, company size, geography, and what they originally hired you to solve. This profile is your raw material.
Name the specific business outcome
Not uptime. Not support tickets resolved. A business outcome: pass a compliance audit, avoid a breach that would trigger personal liability, keep patient-facing systems online during an EHR cutover. Frame it in terms of what the decision-maker loses sleep over.
Find the thing only you can say
A certification you hold that fewer than 10 MSPs in your city have. A track record number. A process you've built after solving the same problem 20 times. If any other MSP could copy your positioning statement word for word without lying, it's not specific enough.
Write the sentence
Fill in the formula. Read it out loud. If it sounds like marketing copy, rewrite it until it sounds like something you'd actually say to a prospect in a coffee shop. Plain language. Specific numbers. No jargon.
Put it everywhere — consistently
LinkedIn headline. Website hero. The first line of your SDR outreach. Your email signature. The cover page of every proposal. Consistency is what converts a sentence into a brand position. One version. Everywhere. Every time.
