MSP Marketing

Why MSP Marketing Fails

By Andrew Moon · Orange Nomad · Updated March 2026

Most MSP owners have tried marketing. Some have spent real money on it. And most of them have the same result to show for it: not much.

That's not because MSP marketing is hard. It's because the same five mistakes show up in almost every failed attempt. Here they are, in order of how often they happen.

Reason 01
No Defined ICP
Marketing to "any business that needs IT support" is not marketing. It's hoping someone finds you. When you're trying to reach everyone, your messaging resonates with no one. The website is vague. The LinkedIn headline says "we help businesses." The Google Business Profile has no vertical specificity. Nothing sticks because nothing is aimed at anyone in particular.
The fix: Define your Ideal Client Profile before writing a single word of marketing copy. Vertical, size, geography, decision-maker title, core pain points. Once you know exactly who you're talking to, every piece of content becomes a target, not a broadcast.
Reason 02
Doing Stage C Before Stage A
Running a referral program before you have a repeatable onboarding experience. Running ads before you have a landing page worth landing on. Asking for testimonials from clients you've never formally checked in with. The sequence is wrong, so the results are wrong.
The fix: Stage A first. Lead generation infrastructure — ICP, positioning, digital presence, lead capture — has to work before you invest in conversion or retention activities. The 3Cs Framework maps this sequence explicitly.
Reason 03
Cotton Candy Marketing
Nice-looking content with no conversion path. A website that looks polished but doesn't capture leads. LinkedIn posts with good engagement and no CTA. A newsletter that educates but never sells. It feels like marketing. It produces nothing.
The fix: Every piece of marketing needs a next step. Not a hard sell — a clear invitation to raise their hand. A lead magnet. An assessment. A free audit. Something that moves a prospect from passive observer to active lead.
Reason 04
One-Touch Follow-Up
A prospect downloads your lead magnet. You send one email. They don't respond. You move on. That's not a follow-up system. Most MSP contracts are decided after four to six meaningful touches — but most MSPs give up after one or two.
The fix: Build a nurture sequence. A series of emails — spaced, value-first, relevant to your ICP — that warms leads over time without feeling like a pitch. One touch is an introduction. A sequence is a relationship.
Reason 05
Using Generic Advice From Non-MSPs
Most marketing advice is written for SaaS companies, e-commerce brands, or service businesses with short sales cycles. The tactics don't translate. An MSP running a lead generation playbook designed for a software startup will get startup results — which means almost nothing.
The fix: Use a framework built specifically for the MSP world. One that accounts for the longer sales cycle, the technical buyer, the referral-dependent pipeline, and the recurring revenue model. The 3Cs Framework was built from inside managed services — not borrowed from a different industry.
