Build

Idea→Working Tool
By Andrew Moon · Orange Nomad · The AI Leverage Framework

Build is the step where something real gets made. Using the highest-priority gap from your Prioritize work and the prompting skills from Step 4, you create your first purpose-built AI tool — not a demo, not a chat window you try once and forget, but a repeatable, documented system that solves a specific problem in your business.

Common first builds include intake automation, proposal drafting assistants, internal knowledge bases, and follow-up sequence generators. The exact build depends on your gap list. The principle is always the same: one working tool that produces a before-and-after result you can measure. Not ten tools. Not a platform. One tool, done right, producing output you use.

What This Step Covers

Select your first build target from the Stage A priority list
Owner: You. Time: 15 minutes. Cost: $0.
Document exact inputs and outputs before writing any prompts
Owner: You. Time: 30 minutes. Cost: $0.
Build and test the core prompt chain with 5 real business examples
Owner: You. Time: 2–4 hours. Cost: $0–$20 in AI API credits.
Write a one-page SOP for the tool covering inputs, process, and output use
Owner: You. Time: 30 minutes. Cost: $0.
What Makes It a Tool vs. a Prompt

A prompt is something you run once and hope for good output. A tool has defined inputs, a tested prompt chain, documented output format, and an SOP that tells a team member how to use it. The SOP is not optional. If only you know how to run it, it's not a business tool — it's a personal trick. Stage C depends on tools your team can operate without you.

What a Good First Build Looks Like

A good first build has a clear trigger, a predictable process, and a consistent output. Intake form submitted → AI drafts a personalized follow-up email. New proposal request → AI generates a scoped proposal outline from a template. Weekly content list → AI drafts first-pass social posts ready for review. Each of these has a before state (manual, inconsistent, slow) and an after state (automatic, consistent, fast).

The mistake most people make at this step is building too much at once. They design a system that automates fifteen steps when they should be automating one. One working tool produces confidence and a proof of concept. Fifteen half-built tools produce nothing except a reason to stop. Start with one. Get it working. Document it. Then go back to the priority list.
