Prompt

By Andrew Moon · Orange Nomad · The AI Leverage Framework

Most service business owners who feel stuck with AI have a prompting problem, not an AI problem. The tools are capable. The communication layer between human intent and AI output is where results break down. You ask for a draft and get something generic. You ask for a strategy and get bullet points you already knew. You ask for something specific and get something that needs to be completely rewritten.

Prompt teaches the four-element framework: role, context, constraint, and output format. These are not tricks. They are the structural principles that separate a response that requires rewriting from a response that goes straight into your business. Once this communication layer clicks, every other Unlock step becomes faster — because you stop fighting the tool and start directing it.

What This Step Covers

Master the four elements: role, context, constraint, output format
Owner: You. Time: 2 hours of practice. Cost: $0.
Rewrite 5 existing prompts using the four-element framework and compare outputs
Owner: You. Time: 1 hour. Cost: $0.
Build a personal prompt library organized by business function
Owner: You + team. Time: 2 hours. Cost: $0.
Practice constraint-setting with specific, observable, testable language
Owner: You. Time: 30 minutes. Cost: $0.
The Four-Element Test

Before you send a prompt, check for all four: Role — who are you asking the AI to be? Context — what does it need to know about the situation? Constraint — what specific rules must the output follow? Output format — exactly what shape should the response take? Missing any one of these is why you're rewriting the output instead of using it.

Why This Unlocks Everything Else

Prompt is the foundation of Stage B because Build and Integrate both depend on your ability to communicate with AI systems consistently and specifically. If your prompts produce variable output, your builds will be unreliable. If your prompts require constant editing, your integrations will require constant supervision.

The four-element framework is transferable. Once you learn it, it applies to every AI tool, every use case, every new situation you encounter. You don't have to relearn how to communicate every time a new model releases. You're building a skill, not learning a trick. That distinction matters at every step in Stage C, when you're directing a portfolio of AI tools across multiple business functions simultaneously.
