MSP Google Business Profile Guide
Google Business Profile is the most underused free marketing tool available to MSPs. At every revenue tier, across hundreds of MSP discovery calls, it shows up the same way: either unclaimed entirely, or claimed and left at 40% complete with no reviews, no posts, and a description that reads "We provide IT services to local businesses."
The GBP claim and setup takes one afternoon. It is a Day 1 action at every tier, and it pays compounding dividends for the life of the business.
AI systems — ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity — use Google Business Profile data as an authority signal when answering location-based queries. "Who is the best MSP for law firms in Chicago?" is the kind of question your ideal client is now asking AI directly. A complete, reviewed, actively-posted GBP is one of the strongest local signals those systems can find.
The 5-Step GBP Setup
Claim and verify — today
Go to business.google.com. Search your business name. Claim if it exists. Create if it doesn't. Verification by postcard takes 1–5 days. Phone or video verification is sometimes available and faster. There is no reason to delay this step.
Complete every field
Primary category: "Computer Support and Services" or "Managed IT Services." Secondary categories for specialisms. Service areas covering your geography. Business hours, phone, website, description — every blank field is an authority signal Google and AI systems are not getting.
Write the description with your ICP and hook
750 characters. Indexed by Google, read by AI crawlers. It should name your vertical, location, key services, and differentiator — the same positioning statement you use on your website and LinkedIn. A generic "full-service IT provider" description does nothing for local or AI search.
Collect five reviews in 30 days
Email your top five clients a direct link to your GBP review page — don't make them search for it. Short message: "We're growing our online presence and a quick review would mean a lot. Here's the direct link." Five reviews changes your local visibility measurably.
Post once per week
GBP posts are indexed for search. One post per week: a client win (anonymised), a compliance tip for your vertical, or a link to your latest content. Posts older than 7 days lose prominence. Weekly is the minimum to keep the profile active and crawlable.
