Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of creating and structuring content so that AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews — will discover, understand, and cite that content when answering user queries. The goal is not a ranking in search results. The goal is a citation in an AI-generated answer.
Traditional SEO asks: how do I rank for this keyword? AEO asks: how do I become the source AI systems cite when someone asks a question in my area of expertise?
The distinction matters because the behaviour of buyers has changed. Prospects no longer scroll through ten blue links to find an IT provider. They ask a question directly to an AI system and trust the answer it gives them. The MSP that appears in that answer is already credible before the first contact. The MSP that does not appear does not exist in that buyer's discovery process.
The AI Platforms That Matter
ChatGPT Search
800–900M weekly users
OpenAI's search-enabled model. Combines Bing's index with GPT reasoning. Cites sources directly with links. High-quality referral traffic for cited pages.
Perplexity
780M+ monthly queries
Research-focused answer engine. High citation frequency for detailed, well-sourced content. Often the highest-quality referral traffic among AI platforms.
Google AI Mode
Powered by Gemini 2.5
Google's AI search layer. Uses "query fan-out" to break complex questions into sub-queries. Comprehensive coverage rewarded over single-keyword optimisation.
Google AI Overviews
2B+ monthly users
Appears at the top of many Google searches. Pulls from indexed pages with strong structured data, clear answers, and E-E-A-T signals.
AEO vs SEO — The Core Difference
Traditional SEO
Goal: rank in search results
Target: search engine algorithms
Signal: keywords, backlinks, page authority
Output: a position in a list of links
User action: clicks through to your page
Competition: other pages for the same keyword
AEO
Goal: be cited in AI-generated answers
Target: AI reasoning systems
Signal: schema, E-E-A-T, answer-first structure
Output: a mention and link in an AI answer
User action: reads your citation with pre-built trust
Competition: being the most authoritative source on a topic
Why This Matters for MSPs Now
MSP buyers are technically literate and research-heavy. They do not make managed services decisions after reading one webpage. They investigate. They compare. They ask detailed questions before they talk to anyone.
Increasingly, that investigation happens through AI systems. "What should I look for in an MSP for a law firm?" "What does HIPAA compliance actually require from an IT provider?" "How much should a 50-person financial services firm spend on managed IT?" These are the questions that are being asked of ChatGPT and Perplexity today — before a prospect ever visits a website.
The MSP that appears in those answers owns the consideration phase of the buying decision. AEO is how you get there.
Common Questions
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. The technical foundations overlap — fast, crawlable pages, structured data, quality content — and traditional search results still matter. AEO is an additional layer built on top of a functional SEO foundation, not a replacement for it.
How do I know if AI systems are citing my site?
Test manually. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode the questions your ideal clients would ask. See if your site appears. For ongoing monitoring, tools like OmniSEO or Profound track AI citation frequency over time.
What kind of content gets cited by AI systems?
Content that leads with a direct, complete answer to a specific question. Content with structured data (FAQPage, HowTo, Article schema). Content that demonstrates experience and expertise — specific outcomes, named numbers, credentialed authors. Content that is regularly updated.
What is GEO and is it the same as AEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. Some practitioners use GEO and AEO interchangeably. Others use GEO as the broader category — optimising for any generative AI system — and AEO specifically for answer engines like Perplexity and ChatGPT Search. The practical tactics are the same.
