You're Flying Blind and Calling It Intuition

I've got some questions for you. Answer honestly.

What's your customer acquisition cost this month? Exactly.

What's your average revenue per customer? Has it gone up or down in the last 90 days?

What's your team's capacity utilization?

What's your cash conversion cycle?

If you hesitated on ANY of those—or thought "I'd have to check"—we need to talk.

Because here's what's happening: You're running your business on feelings. You're making decisions based on vibes. You're flying a plane without instruments.

And you're calling it "intuition."

THE PROBLEM

"I just know my business."

No. You don't. You have FEELINGS about your business.

You feel like sales are good. You feel like the team is busy. You feel like cash flow is okay.

But feelings lie. Here's why:

Bias 1: You notice what's loudest, not what's most important. A customer complaint registers. A slow leak in profit margins goes unnoticed for months. Without data, you're reacting to noise, not signal.

Bias 2: Recency makes everything feel like a trend. One bad week feels like the business is dying. One good week feels like everything's fixed. Without historical data, every week is an emotional roller coaster.

Bias 3: You confirm what you already believe. If you think the sales team is struggling, you notice every lost deal. If you think they're crushing it, you explain away the misses. Data keeps you honest.

Bias 4: Intuition is pattern-matching on LIMITED data. Your "gut" is just your brain matching the current situation to past experiences. But your sample size is small. Your memory is selective. Your context is unique.

Intuition without data isn't wisdom. It's expensive guessing.

THE SHIFT

Here's how to stop flying blind:

Step 1: Identify Your Vital Signs — Your business has vital signs, just like your body. A small number of metrics that tell you whether you're healthy or dying. Most businesses need 5-7. That's it. More drowns you in data. Fewer misses critical signals. Pick metrics across four categories: Money (Revenue, profit margin, cash flow), Customer (Acquisition cost, lifetime value, satisfaction), Operations (Capacity, quality, efficiency), Team (Productivity, retention, engagement). Don't track everything. Track what matters.

Step 2: Create the Dashboard — One page. Just one. For each vital metric, show: Current value, Trend (up, down, flat), Target, Status (green, yellow, red). This isn't a detailed report. It's a glance-able health check.

Step 3: Weekly Metrics Review — 30 minutes. Once a week. Non-negotiable. Look at each metric and ask three questions: 1. What is it? (The number) 2. Why? (The story behind the number) 3. What now? (The action, if any) This simple ritual transforms how you understand your business.

Step 4: Balance Leading and Lagging — Lagging indicators tell you what happened: revenue, profit, customer count. Leading indicators predict what's coming: pipeline, traffic, engagement. You need both. Lagging tells you if your strategy worked. Leading tells you if your strategy WILL work. Don't just measure results. Measure the inputs that drive results.

THE CLOSE

Here's your transformation: UNMEASURED → MEASURED.

Data doesn't replace intuition. Data INFORMS intuition. It gives your gut something real to work with.

Your action step: Pick your 5-7 vital metrics this week. Create a simple one-page dashboard. Then actually look at it every week.
